Young in Prison South Africa

The aim of Young in Prison South Africa is to ensure that even within a harsh prison environment, our children and youth are given the opportunity to become responsible, productive and participating citizens of our country.

Young in Prison works with young offenders ages 14-21 in rehabilitative programming using arts, literacy and sports as the vehicles through which to do so. Through holistic programming that offers positive mentoring and encourages development of the self both during and after incarceration, YiP seeks to encourage program participants to make positive life choices and to become successful and contributing members of society.

Youth in prison in South Africa are starved for activity, education and stimulation. The limited programming for youth in conflict with the law that exists is implemented by grassroots organizations that often lack proper funding. Although youth, as a collective group, are highly visible on the South African political spectrum, youth-at-risk, especially those that have problematic pasts, are not prevalent in civic participation.

YIPSA holds events throughout the year such as art exhibitions and film screenings - joining this group will ensure that you know whats going on and how you can be involved in this rewarding and important cause.
