More about WeCan

BACKGROUND

“We can youth movement” is an innovation by concerned citizens hoping to improve quality of life of youth around Limpopo. This objective will be achieved through participation in youth empowerment programs. Young people are at heightened risk of HIV as they are exposed to HIV risk factors such as poverty, lack of access to health services, sexual education, HIV information and increased risk of sexual exploitation. Government called on members of communities to join hands and play a pivotal part in empowering young people with education, business and employment opportunities.

Sir Elton John, the founder of Elton John AIDS Foundation said, “African youth has grown in the shadow of AIDS, It is time to see a new freedom. Let it be remembered that you and young people around the world joined forces and became the generation that finally made AIDS history. You are the future of this planet, and boy we do need you”
I believe the single most important thing each of us can do after we leave here is to connect with a young person. Listen; truly listen, to what she has to say. Give her a seat at the table. Let her be part of the conversation. And let’s make sure our work reflects her input and her voice. If we support our young people, if we give them the confidence and the space to speak out against bigotry and injustice, and if we take the time to listen and empower them…they will end this epidemic.
This will provide a platform where young people are encouraged to take charge of their lives, they are able to achieve this by addressing their situations and then take action in order to improve their access to resources and transform their consciousness through their beliefs, values, and attitudes. There are numerous models that youth empowerment programs use that help youth attain empowerment. Youth empowerment is often addressed as a gateway to intergenerational equity, civic engagement and democracy building. Activities will focus on youth-led media, youth rights, youth councils, youth activism, youth involvement in community decision-making and other methods. Nelson Mandela said, “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do”.
The program will help confront the problems of: Drugs, Teen pregnancy, HIV and AIDS and STI’S, Suicide, Bullying, Self-esteem/ self confidence
When youth participate in established empowerment programs they see a variety of benefits. The practices of youth involvement and empowerment become embedded within the community culture. Adults and organizations also benefit from empowerment programs. They both become more connected and responsive to youth in the community, which leads to program improvements as well as increased participation from youth.
“I admire young people who are concerned with the affairs of their community and nation perhaps because I also became involved in struggle whist I was still at school.” Nelson Mandela
Through We can Youth Movement:
We will restore the spirit of citizenry, “We can never get a re-creation of community and heal our society without giving our citizens a sense of belonging." Patch Adams ; “No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be included from birth. A society that cuts off from its youth severs its lifeline." -- Kofi Annan
Civil society and government (universities, social dev, health, education, NPO’s, Religious leaders, traditional leaders, municipalities, SAPS, Businesses, traditional healers) will collaborate and work together: Business, labor and civil society organizations have skills and resources that are vital in helping to build a more robust global community- Kofi Annan. This way we will build youth who will not ask what the country can do for them but ask their country what they can do for their country. Working together, we can do more. “We can only reach the highest height, if we encourage each other.” “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ― Mahatma Gandhi . The youth is our future hope.
Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) will help in encouraging people to recommit to efforts of building communities grounded on positive values and rededicate to building a caring society in pursuit of creating lasting peace and prosperity in the country. It will afford young people a networking platrform that facilitates and coordinates all processes and initiatives aimed at combatting moral degeneration. As a civil society driven initiative, it will provide the opportunity to redouble our efforts as a full partnership of the people, and pay special attention to the issues of development, social cohesion and nation building. The program will also support traditional and cultural programs.
