Wag-‘n-Bietjie Game Safaris is situated near Perdeberg (Paardeberg) in the South West Free State, approximately 40 km from Kimberley. The area is rich in history. Kimberley is well-known for the first diamond mines, but more so for the important battles fought in that area during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). There are remnants of British forts on the “koppies” (hills) on the farm. The Modder River runs through the farm. It was at the battle of Paardeberg on the banks of the Modder River where General Piet Cronje of the Boer forces surrendered to Lord Kitchener. This battle changed the outcome of the War as it was the first significant British victory of the War. The Paardeberg War Museum near the battlefield, and some 5 km from the farm, is open from Tuesday-Saturday. There are numerous other battlefields and Boer War heritage sites in the area.
