Verulam Islamic Institute

This property was purchased in 1986 by the Islamic Centre Trust in order to develop a youth camp for students. In the late 1990’s a partnership with Munazzamat Dawah from Sudan a school for girls was established which also incorporated a dormitory, hall, chalets, staff houses and a masjid. In 2006, Al-Maktoum Foundation took over the running of the centre and contributes to the operational expenses.

Verulam Islamic Institute / Masakhane Girls’ Secondary School is situated in Verulam, Kwa Zulu Natal. Over the years, this school has been providing education for female learners from all over South Africa and neighbouring countries. This institute is a Non Profitable Organization, which runs grades 8 – 12 on campus. All our students live on campus and are the responsibility of this institute until they complete their secondary education. Staff of this institute is therefore their guardians. In total, we have 150 students and 32 staff members.

The main object of the school is to provide for learners a well-balanced school education which embraces both religious and secular education based on Islamic principles. Working towards the general, social, secular, religious, educational and cultural needs of the learners as well as ensuring that the school policy is followed and maintained at all times is also amongst the aims and objectives of the school.
