Welcome to Vernuft, a not your ordinary deli and coffee café located in The Woodmill Lifestyle Centre, a vibrant hub in the tranquil surroundings of Onderpapegaaiberg, Stellenbosch.

We serve unpretentious, nourishing and wholesome food made from quality ingredients and according to traditional recipes and preparation methods. Those in the know, refer to it as slow food.

We also have great coffee, delightful wine and crisp craft beer.

Vernuft started when Hester Hoogendijk, her daughter Eleonor Visser and daughter-in-law Karí Hoogendijk opened the deli and coffee café in March 2014. The time had come to realize their mutual dream of having their own inspiring culinary destination, where they could combine their passion and skills to prepare good food and to make award-winning wines, with their desire to share it with their patrons in an unassuming, homelike environment.

Today Vernuft remains true to their original dream and to the Dutch meaning of its name – ingenuity, expertise and know-how.

Our passion for good, unassuming, healthy food and the distinctive experience that we’ve gained over many years in producing our own cheeses, breads and wine, give us a certain edge which makes us stand out as food artisans. As with our wine, the cheeses, yoghurts and breads that we offer are crafted by applying only natural fermentation processes. We, furthermore, pride ourselves for using only quality ingredients and preparing fare according to traditional recipes and as close as possible to the original methods. This applies even to our pizza dough which, as with our bread, is prepared according to a slow fermentation process. The result is a pizza base with the perfect dough structure, superior flavour and lasting quality.

We do not take shortcuts. The consistency, quality and enjoyment of our fare are far too important for us.

But our unpretentious food is merely the start of the Vernuft experience.
