At the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital - the only dedicated children's facility in Sub-Saharan Africa - Paediatric Anaesthesia is provided for children up to the age of 13 years, with special interests in cardiac surgery (including heart transplants), liver transplants and the separation of conjoined twins.
The departments of Anaesthesia and Respiratory Medicine (Department of Medicine) jointly manage the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, dealing with non-cardiac medical, surgical and respiratory patients.
The Department of Anaesthesia supports the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (Department of Surgery), the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (Cardiothoracic Surgery Division, Department of Surgery) and the multi-discipline Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Red Cross Children's Hospital.
