More about Tintsaba

Tintsaba was founded by Sheila Freemantle, her focus was on how she could help the women of rural Swaziland take charge of their lives and become independent. Starting in 1985 with only 12 local women, Sheila's guidance, dedication and innovativeness brought Tintsaba to what it is today. These qualities ushered Tintsaba in to become
renown for refined, high quality sisal basketry, and has been recognised as an industry leader and awarded repeatedly over the years.

Since inception Tintsaba has endeavoured to create a workplace that helps our women grow and develop themselves. Through various courses and workshops ranging in a variety of subjects such as leadership, skill-set development, training, environmental awareness and women's health. We pride ourselves of encouraging an holistic approach to not only our work but to daily life.

In 1991, we diversified our product range to include jewellery made from sisal, the components used the same technique as the basketry but on a very fine and miniature scale to create mini-works-of-art. The discs are then used to create the jewellery mixed with different materials. Then, in 1999, we incorporated the use of sterling silver in the jewellery designs. The silver collections were well recieved and further established Tintsabaís reputations as being innovative and an industry leader.

Unfortunately, our founder Sheila Freemantle, passed away in 2012. But together and with the dedication of her husband, Richard and the Tintsaba team were able to continue in her memory. We strive to uphold the ideals that Sheila built Tintsaba around; excellence, team work, commitment to the earth and the holistic wellbeing
of our groups.

Over the last 30 years Tintsaba has trained and worked with over 1000 women in rural Swaziland. Invoking the passion that Sheila had, we are dedicated to creating the highest quality hand woven sisal products. The future for Tintsaba and Swazi women is one of independence, strength of self and to lead by example within our communities. Together we can weave a better life.
