From its one modest store established in 1974, to Timbercity’s acquisition by the JSE-quoted JD Group in 2011, this service-based chain has come a long way.

1974
Two independent entrepreneurs in Parow, Cape Town open the store that will become one of the leading timber and building material retailers in South Africa.

1976
The Timbercity brand and outlets are acquired by PG Wood.

1979
The first Timbercity franchise is launched and further growth in franchises and company-owned stores follows rapidly.

1986
PG Wood merges with the Mondi subsidiary Bisonbord to form PG Bison.

2004
The Steinhoff Group gains ownership of PG Bison and, through this acquisition, Timbercity becomes part of SteinBuild, the retail division of Steinhoff Africa.

2011
Steinhoff sells its Southern African retail interests, including SteinBuild, to the JD Group. SteinBuild is thus incorporated into one of South Africa’s largest retail groups listed on the JSE.

To date, Timbercity has a sub-continental footprint of 37 branches, including outlets in Swaziland and Namibia. Further expansion is planned in 2012.
