The Sandstone - Saldanha Bay

The Sandstone changed ownership recently (February 1, 2017, to be exact) and from the word go the new owners tried to establish a new energy to this quaint little gem of the West Coast.

Within the first three months we've greatly succeeded with our vision for this unique little social venue and eatery situated on the scenic right side of Saldanha Bay, next to Protea Hotel, behind the West Water Building.

It receives its name from the very stone it’s constructed of. These iconic sand and limestone rocks (also known as calcarenite) can of course be found in new and old architecture all around the West Cost. These days these stones are used for its mere aesthetic appeal.

However, back in the day this building was originally constructed, it was one of the only freely available materials around, as the coast around Saldanha Bay is riddled with layers of the stone.

From what we could gather so far, the building has been around since the mid nineteenth century at least. However, this cannot be verified for certain, as there are no building plans available for the original structure. One thing is for sure, the little house has had a colourful history. Talks with previous owners have revealed that it has been everything from a church to a brothel, and more recently, and possibly originally, a residence.

We now aim to create The Sandstone to a venue with a difference. A place where you, your friends and family can come and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, a tasteful meal and a drink with a view to kill for.

On our menu we really do offer something for everyone, with a variety of flavourful meals, namely breakfast, wraps, salads, gourmet burgers, meat and seafood mains, and a few desserts to top it all off. We take great pride in our gourmet burgers, and many rate them the best in all the West Coast. We also offer a variety of coffees.
