South African Education and Environment Project - SAEP

SAEP runs seven programmes in the impoverished community of Philippi, from early childhood to the university level:

• Our Early Childhood Development (ECD) Programme helps struggling township educare centres (preschools) develop into sustainable, quality education providers through ongoing training, long-term mentorship, structural upgrades and nutritional support.

• Our Hope Scholars Programme provides intensive academic tutoring, mentorship and enrichment activities to promising learners, beginning in grade 9 and following them through to grade 12.

• Our ADT Teach Programme uses mobile laptop labs to teach advanced computer skills to learners in grades 10-12.

• Our Arts Outreach Programme runs workshops in several artistic disciplines, including creative writing, visual art, drama, dance, photography and music, and runs excursions for participating learners.

• Our Environmental Education Programme runs environment clubs for high school learners, and participants in all our youth programmes attend hikes and other outings to develop environmental awareness, teamwork and leadership.

• Our Bridging Year Programme prepares promising township matriculants for success in tertiary education through academic tutoring, mentoring, career counselling, leadership training and skills development.

• Our Tertiary Support Programme provides psycho-social counselling, mentorship, and academic, financial and material support to bridging year alumni to bolster their success in higher education.

SAEP also houses the Centre for Innovative Education and Community Service, its research and development arm, which conducts research, monitors and evaluates our work, incubates new programmes, develops educational resources, promotes community service, and contributes to dialogue on education and youth development in South Africa.
