The ROGZ Academy Books and Beyond registered NPO (176-493)

is an organisation committed to education and to improving the lives of learners at Sophakama Primary School in Dunoon (Milnerton).

We want to turn Sophakama into one of the Western Cape’s leading schools by changing it from an under-performing to a well-performing school!

We have a sustainable plan in place to do this as we work together with the school and its staff to implement appropriate programmes to achieve these goals.

Our volunteers differ in age and background, but we all have the common goal of wanting to make a difference in South Africa.

To date we have:

Assisted in setting up an operational library and computer lab with Internet connection

Provided food to ensure that children are able to learn on a full stomach

Implemented an English literacy programme that gives individual attention to Grade 2 and 3 learners.

Implemented an after-school programme for grade 1 to 4.
This keeps the children off the streets and creates a safe space where they are taught literacy and numeracy.

They also have the opportunity to participate in sport and other clubs and societies such as art and chess.

Implemented an art programme.


Our next challenge is to assist the teachers in reaching ALL the learners of Sophakama by offering them self and team development as well as additional training and resources. We have already kicked this off with the school management team and are really excited about the opportunities this will create.

We have a number of other important programmes that we would like to implement such as numeracy, remedial, addressing the language of teaching and learning, ensuring learners are at the right level when starting Grade 1 and so much more.

We BELIEVE that our methodology can be transferred to other schools and know that this is an exciting, positive vision for education is South Africa
