Riverside Hockey Club

Riverside Hockey Club was born in 2000 out of the amalgamation of the Glenwood Old Boys and Crusaders Hockey clubs.
Prior to the merger both clubs enjoyed a proud history, with Glenwood men’s and ladies teams featuring in the premier league from the late 1950s. Crusaders hockey saw a men’s team in the premier league in 1989, with the ladies being promoted to the top level in 1992.

Importantly, the club has had players progress to the highest levels, the South African National team. Marcia Marescia (captain), Kerry Bee, Gillian Daniels, Michele MacNaughton, Jacqui Geyser, and Caryn Bentley have appeared for the SA ladies, while Gowan Jones, Tim Drummond, Lloyd Madsen, Lloyd Norris-Jones, the Paton brothers Taine and Wade, Ken Forbes, Gregg Clark, David Staniforth, Kevin MacNaughton and Wayne Phillips have represented the men.

The juniors have recorded similar achievements, producing South African players at the under 14, 16, 18 and 21 levels still to this day.

Today, this proud history, with men’s and ladies teams being hosted in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Super League. The strength of the club exists in its depth, with the club boasting ten teams in total (five men and five ladies), as well as masters teams. The club caters for players age 5 – 50+ (and is the only club to offer mini-hockey on an artificial turf).

Tuesday and Thursday nights see both the men’s and ladies teams training on Durban North state of the art astro turf. New players are always welcome!
