Refilwe is a township In the historical town of Cullinan, east of Pretoria in Gauteng Province, South Africa. It was established in 1975 as a mine residence for Black mine workers and the black residence who were forcefully removed from their settlement in the then Ditloung, Kgapamadi and Matolokwane areas to make way for the white farmers. In the 1980s to the 1990s the then Premier Mine Management give the location to black management or municipality led by a group of elderly male persons, that is the birth of the name Refilwe and afterwards the Tswelopele Progressive Party won the local elections and run the municipality until the first democratic national elections of which Tswelopele merged with the ANC and along the political way the two parties separated and ANC took over the municipality and named it Dinokeng tsa Taemane Municipality in the Metsweding district. In 2008/9 the residence of Refilwe protested and burned the municipal offices in demand of the removal of the then mayor accusing her of corruption, mismanagement of funds and nepotism and the municipality then was put under administration by the government and later was incorporated into Tshwane Metropolitan on Region-05, which made Tshwane to be the 3rd largest municipality in the world to date.
