More about Radio Today Johannesburg

Broadcasting on 1485AM in Johannesburg and nationally on DSTV Audio Channel 869. Streaming on www.1485.org.za. Also on cells 1485.mobi.

Radio Today uses Shoutcast & WOWZA to deliver a live HE-AAC / AAC+ audio stream to a Flash player. Very few mobile platforms support Flash streaming but some do from Shoutcast (SC). Some phones will work out of the box this way but for most other phones you'll need to install a 3rd party application depending on your phone's operating system.

Shoutcast streams are typically opened using .pls playlist file. On a PC you would use 3rd party software like Winamp,VLC or iTunes to open a SC stream; on a MAC, you would use QuickTime, VLC or iTunes.

The SC playlist URL for Radio Today is http://infant.antfarm.co.za/radiotoday/listen.pls
Some models support a .pls while others need the direct URL to the stream. In order for you to listen to a stream using your mobile phone using above URL, please refer to the table below to get some guidance as to what could be done to achieve this.

Blackberry
Browser method
You must have a Blackberry running an OS newer than 4.5.
Copy the URL to a bookmark. Clicking this bookmark should present you with the option to stream or save the file, click stream.

App method
Several apps advertise the ability to steam radio stations, and there really is a wide range of options available for you. We recommend TuneWiki. Not only can this handle steaming radio, its long list of features makes it worth your time.

Nokia/Symbian
There is currently no “out-of-the-box” solution for Nokia or other Symbian type phones. There are two 3rd party solutions that are compatible with theses handsets, one of which is dependent on the station to register and add their stations to the list of stations, namely Virtual Radio.

Take a look at Virtual Radio http://www.vradio.org

Or Nokia Internet Radio http://nokia-internet-radio.en.softtonic/symbian in which you can manually add the streaming URL. If Nokia Internet Radio has been installed on a Symbian handset, opening the SC URL above in a browser on the mobile will launch Internet Radio and automatically playback the audio stream without needing to register the station.

Android
On some Android phones you could download and install the “A Online Radio”. Check the Free Multimedia Category on the Android Market. This option depends on the version of Android you’re running. Add your interested channel on your own by using either of 2 ways:
1) Manually add, by entering Link.
2) Click on your channel link insider browser. The app will be launched and your channel will be added to favourites.

iPhone/iPad
You can open the above URL directly and the stream will playback in QuickTime/iTunes

Windows Mobile
By installing a 3rd party application called GSPlayer, http://www.freewareppc.com/multimedia/gsplayer.shtml One can enter the above URL and the stream should open.
