Prostate Artery Embolisation Johannesburg

Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE) is an effective alternative to surgery for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), with similar results and fewer complications.
This new, minimally invasive technique is done by the Interventional Radiologist in consultation with the patient’s urologist.
The embolisation is done under local anaesthetic or sedation, without the need for a general anaesthetic.
Patients either go home on the same day, or spend one night in hospital.
Under x-ray guidance, a tiny catheter is inserted into the arteries that supply the prostate gland.
Next, tiny beads are injected which cut off the blood supply to the prostate, which then shrinks, alleviating the symptoms related to the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
