Hengro Fruit previously known as Poor Man's Friend originally belong to old Mr Hendricks who came from District six where he traded from his store. When, in February 1966, the National Party government announced that District Six was to be razed to the ground in order to make space for a new ‘white area’ Mr Hendricks and his family was forced to leave D6 but was promised under the group areas act he would be given a store. He was placed right in front of the Athlone Police Station where he started trading from a cart and later became a truck. The council then decided to upgrade Klipfontien road to what we know it today. He was then placed opposite the road where his grandson Faizel Hendricks still trades from today.
