More about Peak Academy

Our Academy in Fish Hoek is founded by experienced teachers and lecturers. Observing the growing market requirement for a quality, internationally recognised curriculum, we prepare private Candidates to write the Cambridge International examinations – C.I.E. We offer tutoring towards IGCSE, AS and A Level external examinations.

Students attend the Academy daily from 08h30 to 13h30 to be tutored in class sessions and perform self-study.

Our Educational Methodology

As a priority, students are expected to commit themselves to learning and to advancing their academic schooling career. This requires a renewed commitment to self-discipline. Simultaneously we encourage personal growth, core values and positive socialization in an environment that supports individuality and a positive self-esteem.

In order to facilitate this, we offer a structured educational environment where students combine class attendance with supervised self-study. Our timetable has formal teaching for fifty percent of the academic day. Classes do not exceed a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:8. This allows for a close academic relationship where students are treated as individuals with differing needs and not as numbers in a classroom. The other fifty percent of the academic day is given to supervised, self-directed study.

We understand that many students have been through a failing educational system that has stifled their personal and academic progress. We offer close attention to their individual growth. We encourage them to assume responsibility for their own success, based on a disciplined work ethic, in a supportive and harmonious environment.

Our Culture and Values

Students perform best when they are in a controlled academic environment supported by motivated, experienced teachers. We offer friendly but structured surroundings in which students are encouraged to fulfill their potential. We embrace individualism and personal growth under the guidance of rules essential for academic structure. We expect self discipline and accountability from students. We strongly encourage the values of respect and understanding. We embrace ethnic and cultural diversity by encouraging tolerance and open-mindedness. We create an environment where socialization occurs free of peer pressure and prejudice. Students are encouraged to find their own self identity in a comfortable, non-threatening environment with the respect and support of peers and teachers.

Homework, testing and examinations

The tutor’s role is to assist in a student’s understanding of Cambridge syllabus material. During classes, students are given academic direction by the tutors’ knowledgeable and experienced interpretation of a subject. Students are expected to research further, following the tutor’s guidelines, using Cambridge text books and online resources. Tutors will gauge the differing abilities of students and detail different academic progressions per student. The tutor’s aim is to complete the required syllabus before the designated Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Students are expected to complete appropriate tasks, mostly textbook driven, within timeframes set by the tutors. These tasks are undertaken during supervised self-study time at the Academy. Should tasks not be completed during Academy hours, students are expected to do so as homework.

Tutors will set tests at appropriate intervals to monitor progress and ascertain feedback on how a students have understood work. Tutors will return marked tests and work through the correct answers.

Internal Assessments are written in March and September. This exposes students to the nature of the external examinations.

Cambridge International Exams (CIE) are written at various CIE registered centres across Cape Town, the closest one being in Wynberg at the moment. Peak Academy facilitates the registeration process for these exams, but the onus rests on the parents for the registration and payment to the CIE centres directly.
