More about OR Tambo Cultural Precinct

Oliver Reginald Tambo, one of South Africa’s most loved and illustrious leaders, lived in the community of Wattville with his wife, Adelaide Tambo, from 1948 until he went into exile in 1960, and then on his return to South Africa in 1991. Such was their bond with the community of Wattville that OR and Adelaide Tambo chose the Tamboville Cemetery as their final resting place. Their gravesite has since been declared a National Heritage Site.

The City of Ekurhuleni has established the OR Tambo Narrative Centre in Wattville. Here, a multimedia, interactive exhibition will narrate, commemorate and celebrate the life and legacy of OR and Adelaide Tambo, and describe the significant people, historical places and events in Wattville that are associated with their lives and times.

The Narrative Centre is part of a larger precinct which includes a monument at the OR and Adelaide Tambo gravesite, an environmental centre, a crafts centre and an amphitheatre for performing arts.
