Helmut Kluge bought farm Kristall in 1988. Vines were planted in 1990
and the first wine was produced in 1996. The year before Kristall
Kellerei was founded as a closed corporation.
The first cultivars did not adapt well to the harsh climate along the
Omaruru River and it took some innovative experimentation to determine
the right grape for this area. Currently wine is made from Colombar,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Tinta Barocca, Shiraz and Pinotage.
Further, a small distillation process was started and since Kristall
Kellerei became somewhat of a tourist attraction, a tasting room with
a small restaurant was also built. Here Namibian grappa – called NAPPA
- and LUMELA (made from the local monkey orange) are distilled.

Kristall Kellerei is now in the second development phase and new
owners (since 2008), Katrin and Michael Weder, have implemented
systems to not only improve the quality of the products, but also
increasing awareness of its product through proper branding by
introducing unique labelling and packaging of its products. The
obtainment of various international awards is proof that the company
is on the right track.

Due to the demand of its products, management decided to expand its
production capacity. And when the opportunity arose to utilize the
fruit grown at Naute Agricultural Project (Keetmanshoop) the decision
was taken to establish a second, and bigger, distilling establishment
in the beautiful Löwen Rivier vally.
Currently Naute Kristall produces the original Namibian gin – NAMGIN,
a date brandy - DANDY , and various spirits made from pomegranate
(GRANATé), prickly pears (MATISA) and dates (DATTEL). Initially the
company employed nine (9) people, but this has grown to thirteen (13)
full-time staff members.

The company balance & business cc, under the leadership of Mrs
Christine Zeitler, was appointed as exclusive sales and marketing
agents, with a national and international distribution mandate for
Namibia’s original dry Gin - NAM GIN ( handcrafted in Namibia).

The export of NAM GIN to Europe commenced a few months ago, with the
distribution hub situated in Germany. Other of our popular products,
such as NAPPA – Namibian oaked grappa – and our unique wood matured
date brandy - DANDY - will be our next export success.
