More about Mount Camdeboo Conservation Experience

Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve offers the ultimate in volunteer conservation programs – the Mount Camdeboo Conservation Experience!

Our vision is to develop a volunteer program that offer participants the experience of a lifetime, one that imparts on them our passion for the conservation of wildlife and nature and shares our knowledge of and experience in the many aspects of running a successful game reserve. This includes supporting and involving our volunteers in outreach initiatives that are currently running in Graaff-Reinet and Pearston. When our volunteers leave Mount Camdeboo, we want them to leave knowing that their contribution has made a lasting impact on conservation and the local community.

Camdeboo (meaning ‘place of green hills’ in the ancient Khoisan language) is a 30,000+-acre malaria-free reserve boasting dramatic mountain scenery and a huge variety of flora and fauna.

At MCCE, you will learn about the function of the classic African game ranger and gain insight into the workings and running of a game reserve, something most guests never get to see. You will also help with important conservation of some of Africa's most iconic species (as well as lesser-known, but equally important, ones).

Through fieldwork and game reserve maintenance, you will have ample opportunities to put into practice the theory you learn. And you'll do it alongside the African wildlife that roams freely throughout the reserve (many species of which you are helping to protect).

This project does not just cater for ‘academics’ and experienced conservationists. While that kind of background certainly helps, the most important requirements we seek in our volunteers are enthusiasm and a desire to be a part of an authentic working safari – one that will deepen their understanding of wildlife and conservation. And all while having an unforgettable adventure in one of the most unique and spectacular settings in South Africa.

But we're not all work and no play. Our conference centre offers WiFi, DSTV, a pool table, a dartboard, a communal braai area overlooking the river, a few guitars, and a small gym. And in addition to activities on the reserve, weekends are free to explore the surrounding area. Adventure seekers can indulge in mountain biking and paintball, and the truly brave can surf the world-famous break at Jeffrey's Bay. Addo Elephant Park (near Port Elizabeth) is an easy day trip and the only national park in the world to boast the Big 7. History buffs have myriad opportunities to learn about the region's colourful past. And for those interested in palaeontology and geology there are ample discoveries to be made in the mountains and valleys of the Great Karoo.
