Lesotho High School (used to be known as Basutoland High School) is a government school which strives to proved full post primary education for males and females students irrespective of their religious denomination. It was established in 1939 under the paramount of chief Nathanael Griffith Lerotholi. LHS offers opportunities for students to benefit not only academically, but also from extra-curricular activities such as sports activities, singing, in which all students are encouraged to join.
The total number of students changes every year as the number of Form A students admitted differs but the total normally ranges between 1200-1400. There are 53 teachers on grant. The curriculum of LHS is very broad. All learners must study mathematics, science and the languages. The main goal being to adequately prepare school learners for tertiary education. The following subjects are offered at the junior certificate level; English, Mathematics, Science, Sesotho, Geography, History, Business Education, Home Economics and Basic Handcrafts. In addition to these subjects, life skills is offered though it is not examinable but is intended to equip students with necessary life skills during and after their studies.
Compulsory subjects offered at C.O.S.C level are English Language, Sesotho, Mathematics, Science, and Biology. Four optional subjects offered in addition to these are History/Geography/Computer Studies, Literature in English/Principles of Accounts.
The academic performance of students of LHS is generally good but there is a noticeable decline and inconsistency in the results. Factors that contribute to these include high teacher turnover, shortage of teaching/learning unit.
The success of LHS does not depend on the academic staff only but also on the services offered by the supporting staff.
The proprietor of the school – Ministry of Education – has appointed the Board of Governors to run the school on its behalf and there are eight Board members in all.
