More about Jan Marais Nature Reserve

*History of Jan Marais Nature Reserve (JMNR)*

Jan Marais was the benefactor for the establishment of the Jan Marais Nature Reserve ( the same person who was the benefactor to Stellenbosch University). The JMNR is approximately 23 hectares in size and is roughly divided into a disturbed area (3-4 ha) and a undisturbed area with roughly two veld types namely Swartland Fynbos and Swartland Renosterveld. The Jan Marais Nature Reserve was opened in 1919 at a planting ceremony, where a Oak tree was planted by the mayor: Mr. Charlie Neethling.

*Interesting Features*

The Jan Marais Nature Reserve has a Labyrinth , designed by Terry de Vries a well known artist .

It has numerous sculptures including mollusc type structures that surround the natural pond at the lower end of the JMNR.

The kiosk and toilets were designed by famous town Clerk and Architech of Stellenbosch: Walther Blersch (1881-1971) and was built in 1942. The hut structure and thatch roof give the building an African character.
