More about Imibala Gallery

The Imibala Gallery is in an exciting time of self-discovery. The intent of the gallery is to offer a visual platform to mainly contemporary South African artists to showcase their unique work in a wonderful quaint light filled setting.

The gallery was established to not only fill an educative role, but as a growing business to become a sustainable arm which can support the transparent work that the Imibala Trust does. So, both art-lovers and artists alike are encouraged to support and engage in a creative and positive social movement that Imibala precinct offers.

This unique village now consists of a wonderful country menu at the Imibala Restaurant next to the gallery and a retail centre across the street. But the highlight of this precinct is to see how the children and volunteers participate in the educative empowerment of art awareness within our youth. The central narrative of Imibala is predicated on the idea that the arts can have a significant transformative impact on a child’s life.

Yes, the art gallery exhibits mainly contemporary South African art that is for sale, but this gallery appeals to patrons and artists who would like to instil the passion for art in our learners. With your hands-on support the creative momentum of Imibala can continue.

Artists and collaborations between artists are also able to submit ideas for innovate and excellent public art works or installations for the Imibala precinct.

As artists, volunteers, patrons or friends of Imibala, everyone is called to get involved in this world of art and so positively and meaningfully influence a child’s life through art.

The ideas we propagate are:

The art is for everyone regardless of their status in society

Art is about Innovation and preservation

That the process, not only the product, is the measure of the value of an art work

That the arts can have significant transformative impact on the most significant social problems of our time.

Art engages and lays bare the most important issues of our time. Art is a visual voice.

Creativity has been nurtured in many disciplines at Imibala over the years, by dedicated volunteers. The Art Centre behind the Gallery at 16 Bright Street is involved in the lives of over 100 learners per week, who are offered classes in art, drama, ceramics and computer skills. In addition to this remarkable difference that is achieved by supplementing learner's education, the work by the Imibala Trust's sponsor-a-child programme, impacts on children's lives by providing school uniforms to young learners.
