Ichthus Christian School

The name of our school, ICHTHUS, is the Greek name for "fish" and every letter means something specifically:

I - JESUS
CH - CHRIST
TH - GOD'S
U - SON
S - our SAVIOUR.

The name therefore confesses our faith in the truine God. The school badge also has the shape of a fish.

CLASSES:
We offer small classes, limited at 15 learners per class, from Grade RR to 7.

ACADEMICS:
Our aim is to provide academic excellence by well-trained teachers who are appointed by the Governing Body.

SPORT:
Grade RR & R learners get the opportunity learn ball-skills and great motor development. We provide swimming lessons for Grade R learners as part of the school fees. At the beginning of 2016 we introduced the GymKid programme. A trained gymnastics instructor travels to Dundee to present this programme.

Grade 1-3 learners are encouraged to participate in sport. We offer mini-hockey, mini-cricket and mini-rugby. They participate in the inter-house swimming gala as well as the inter-house athletics meeting.

Grade 4-7 learners can play hockey, netball, cricket, soccer, tennis, volleyball, swimming and athletics. Various sport matches are organised against neighbouring schools.They participate in the inter-house swimming gala as well as the inter-house athletics meeting.

All Grade 1-7 learners can become members of the Christian Schools Sport Association, which gives them more opportunities to excel on the sports field/swimming pool or athletic track.

We do not over-emphasize competitiveness in sport, but see the acquisition of sporting skills to maximize the physical development of a child.

OTHER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES:
We offer choir practices and Grade 7's belong to the Expo-club.

We have a Drama-club (English and Afrikaans Orators), Art-club and learners can learn how to play chess. The whole school belongs to the Science-club where we do experiments on a weekly basis.

Each learner receives the opportunity to prove themselves as Entrepreneurs. They invent an idea that fellow learners would find interesting and would be prepared to purchase. The profit they make out of this venture is theirs for their initiative.

We also support our learner's extra mural activites, eg. ballet, wrestling, music, etc

HIGHLIGHTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR:
Bring-and-braai evening for parents and staff at the beginning of the year.

Grandparent's Day which is enjoyed by Grandparents and learners alike. Learners will do a play and afterwards the children will serve tea and refreshments to the Grandparents.

Grade 4 & 5 and Grade 6 & 7 groups get the opportunity to go on tour once a year. The children look forward to this event and see it as a big highlight.

We have a Drama Festival that takes place every second year. We conclude this festival with a Gala-evening.

Every two years we have a play at Ichthus. Both the staff and learners put a lot of effort into this event.

At the end of the year we have a farewell party for the Grade 7 learners.

We publish an annual magazine at the end of the year. The contents are mainly highlights of the school year, also achievements in academics, sport, culture, etc.

We end the year with our yearly prize giving where learners receive recognition for their achievements throughout the year. All learners receive a book prize for his/her progress through the year.
