Groot Phesantefontein

Groot Phesante Fontein is located in the Klein Karoo between Riversdale and Barrydale on the Brandrivier Road.

The farm supplies quality lucerne and feeds to Favourstud. The farm manager (Wessel Havenga) is resowing the ground with high quality oats and lucerne. The irrigation system consist of various catchment dams receiving water from from the mountain streams and fountains. The irrigation dams feeds the sprinkler system by gravity to the lands and pastures.

The farm is producing high quality wool from Dohne Merino sheep. The herd is assessed on a wool producing basis, so that only the finest wool bearing sheep are bred.

The farm hosts a unique combination of Fynbos and estuaries. The Fynbos landscape in the Small Karoo is arguably one of the most beautiful in the world.
Fynbos, the primary vegetation on the farm which resembles wild flowers, is endemic to the Western Cape region and exists nowhere else in the world, drawing unique bird-life and mammals. An abundance of indigenous plants such as Proteas, Ericas, and Restios provide year round enjoyment and colour.

Fynbos, meaning “fine bush” in Afrikaans is the natural shrubland or heathland vegetation occurring in a small belt of the Western Cape of South Africa, mainly in winter rainfall coastal and mountainous areas with a Mediterranean climate.

A game fence is being erected on 800 hectares of the farm and this is to be stocked with a variety of species of antelope. The excellent climate and terrain make the land well suited to multiple species of game which are frequently seen.
