More about Got Wheels?

In all honesty, I’m not quite sure how to start but from the business classes I took, I remember that starting with a story works – apparently, so here’s what I do…

I recently went to a conference with a friend – boring as can be – but a few minutes into the whole thing, I realised that what the presenters were saying made sense, maybe not for me, but definitely to me. So I grabbed the promotional writing pad and pen that was given to each guest and began jotting down some notes which is what I am talking to you about now.

One point that stood out for me, was that we are in the time and age to dream big. I mean, woman have jobs in large, corporate companies and you don’t have to follow your father’s footsteps and take over the family pumpkin farm when you leave school! The unfortunate thing though, is that you can dream until you’re blue in the face, but in reality dreams take hard work. And even then, achieving those dreams can be a challenge.

When I was writing this, I imagined myself standing in front of a group of students, asking them what their dreams were and then – asking them what it is that is standing in the way of their dreams becoming true. It was at this point, that I realised that that isn’t actually necessary. I mean, we all know what it is that we want to do with our lives and even if you don’t know right now, there must be something that you feel strongly about. For me it was education, skills development and ultimately empowerment.

I’ve taught in numerous schools, both in South Africa and abroad and the one thing that comes to mind is the word “but.” Kids (16+) are beginning to look at what they want to study at colleges and universities and there’s always a kind of excitement or spark, which was one of the words that a presenter at this conference used and it reminded me of some of the students that have come my way… they have a passion and that’s when you see that spark, but often when talking about what it is that they want to do after school, that sentence trails off with a “but…”

So, without taking up too much of your time, the challenges that I mentioned do not have to be endured alone. And that is the crux of what I’m trying to get across - that opportunities are rife, (things are not that bad) yet students are ending up sitting at home on the couch, with about ten tabs open on their computers, sending out CV’s and just not getting the jobs. Got Wheels? and the K53-at-School Project can change that! :)

“I went to Saskia for help and lessons for my learner’s license after failing multiple times. Although with her help I passed with 6 marks above the standard pass rate. Her assistance was above and beyond what was needed and done in a very professional way. I would definitely recommend her to any & all of my friends needing to get theirs done!” - Vincenzo Paolini.
