Gantouw Farm

Gantouw Farm is situated in the Sir Lowrys Pass overlooking False Bay. In days gone by the Pass was known as Gantouw (Elands) Pass by the Khoisan people who hunted the beautiful antelope in the area.

The Pass was also one of the main wagon trails to the interior of the country and the tracks of the wagons can still be seen along the old pass.

The Farm enjoys sweeping views over False Bay but also endures extreme weather conditions including high winds and above average rainfall.

When the owners, James and Linky Smith purchased the farm in 2005 some of the existing Merlot vines were removed and Mission, Luccino and Frantoia olive trees were planted. The oil is cold pressed extra virgin and won a Gold Award at the 2013 SA Olive Awards.

The wine maker is Yves Musfeld who has a BSc in Viticulture and winemaking experience in Spain, California and SA.

The Gantouw Sauvignon Blanc is now in its 3rd year and continues to impress. With the high winds the vines have very small yields which in turn gives concentrated aromas which are full of fruit. There are melon, pear and lemon aromas in the nose. The palate is full and shows a nice acid which is typical of this growing region. the wine has a harmonious, lasting aftertaste.

The Gourmet Garlic is an exciting addition to farming activities on Gantouw Farm with over 20 different garlic varieties from around the globe being grown. Limited amounts will be available towards the end of 2014 and all foodies and restauranteurs should find these new garlic entrants very exciting!
The varieties are from as far afield as Russia, Korea, Tibet and France.
All farming on Gantouw Farm is done naturally with no commercial fertilizers nor pesticides being used. All the compost used is made organically on the farm using horse and chicken manure mixed with chippings of alien vegetation on the farm.
