As our rooms are not uniform in size or layout it made perfect sense not to number the rooms but rather to name them. Since we live in Africa, the Big 5 were the first animals that came to mind. Each room is dedicated to a specific animal and decorated as a tribute to that animal. Rooms’ themes start with the door which is carved from solid kiaat with the animal depicted in 3D. Bathroom glass doors are sand blasted with that particular animal as well as some bathroom windows.

We started with only 3 rooms in January 2007, the Elephant Room, Lion Room and the Leopard Suite. Artwork, lamps, mirrors, ornaments, keyrings, “Do Not Disturb” signs, tissue-box covers, bedding, etc compliment the theme of the particular animal after which the room is named. The Rhino and Buffalo Rooms were added about 6 months later. A movie room and games room had to make way for the Zebra and Giraffe Rooms which are the largest rooms besides the Dolphin Room. The Dolphin Room, which was added about 2 years ago is by far the largest room with plantation shutters and splendid views. The Dolphin Room’s bathroom was the inspiration for naming the room as there is a state of the art massage shower and spa bath. With such a huge water supply it was a natural progression to name it the Dolphin Room. Next came the Cheetah Room, which was it a bit tricky with cheetah ornaments and the like not being as readily available as the Big 5. However the Cheetah Room turned out to be a huge design success and is by far my favourite. Lastly, we added the self-catering Lapa, as a result of so many requests for a self-catering unit. The Lapa was already there with a full kitchen – things just had to be re-arranged a bit. All the excess animals pictures, ornaments, carvings and the like went into decorating the Lapa.
