About the Dorr Family

In 2010 Jennifer had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to South Africa to educate high school kids about HIV/AIDS. It’s estimated that approximately 5.6 million people in South Africa have HIV, the highest number of any country in the world. There are 1.9 million orphans in the country. These are staggering numbers and seem almost hopeless. However, what Jennifer saw was not despair or defeat. What she saw was the hope and happiness of people and children who believed the truth of her words when she told them that God loves them and has great plans for their future.

Jennifer’s husband, Brent, never thought he would go to South Africa unless on a safari but last year God worked on his heart. In October 2012, Brent travelled there and after much prayer, the Dorr’s made the decision to move their family to South Africa and become missionaries.

Soon after they made the decision to move to South Africa, they received an email out-of-the-blue from a realtor with an incredible opportunity to purchase a fully furnished bed and breakfast that was dropped to half of the original price. They stepped out in faith and bought it and can’t wait to see it! They will live in it and hope to support themselves and host guest and short-term missionaries who will also help with their mission. When they arrive in South Africa they plan on creating a website for the B&B, but for now, you can see it at http://www.safarinow.com/go/TheGolfLodgeBBAlexandria.

Brent and Jennifer feel this is an incredible opportunity for their family to serve people and spread the love of Jesus. Their children are very excited to move and see the other side of the world. Logan is almost bigger than his parents as a teeager and referred to as their “man-child”. Adriana and Savannah, the twins, are looking forward to meeting the kids of South Africa and experiencing the wildlife. The town of Alexandria, where they will live, is near the Addo Elephant National Park where they anticipate some trips to see the many magnificent animals.

Although their journey seems exciting, it has also been difficult. They’re preparing to leave Jennifer’s mom and husband, her brother, and dearest friends. Brent is quitting his job that he loves, with the City of Lenexa, and they are stepping away from the security of a paycheck and great benefits. Jennifer’s dad passed away a few months ago so they have been slowly downsizing everything he owned, as well as everything they own. Selling their animals has been the most difficult part of getting rid of their possessions. They have sold the cows that they raised from babies, their horses of 10 years, the pony that the girls saved up to buy, pet pigs, and finally their dearly loved goats. They can’t even express how many tears they’ve shed as they said goodbye to their beloved pets. The only animal they plan on taking with them is Lizzie, their son’s dog and Jennifer’s nemesis. Lizzie will be making the long plane trip with the Dorr family if the South African government allows it.
