Depression is labelled a mental illness and there is a huge stigma attached to it – as you would know if you or a loved one is suffering with this condition. It is also labelled ‘hereditary’ and ‘incurable’ by much of the medical industry.

The problem with these labels is that we believe them – after all, doctors have said so, and they have studied for years; and they are the authority on the subject.

So we take medication, tolerate the side-effects, accept that we are ‘sick’ and try not to think about the ‘fact’ that this is a sentence for life. Or we live with the dark cloud hovering over us all the time. Hope it will shift if we change jobs, or partners, or countries. Kid ourselves that most people think about ending it all, killing themselves in the easiest possible way… swerve on the highway into oncoming traffic? No, someone else may get hurt…maybe swerve into a concrete pillar on the highway. Or take poison, gas my car up, find a weapon, slit my wrists the right way, lengthways, I know that … and research the ways that work best on the sly online. Start believing that nobody would miss us anyway. That their lives would be easier without us around.
