Debi van Wyk Dressage

Debi van Wyk is a National Judge and holds a BHSAI teaching certificate.

She has been riding and involved with horses since she was 3 years old. She competed in show jumping in Ireland as a child and junior and trained with Iris Kellett in Dublin, Ireland for a year, where she completed her British Horse Society Assistant Instructors course before emigrating to South Africa in 1987.

When she arrived in South Africa she worked at the Indanda Club in Sandton for about 2 years as Assistant Yard Manager, with over 100 competition, polo and riding school horses under her care, before moving into the corporate world. While working in the corporate world she still taught part-time and competed on her previous horse before his retirement.

She started judging in Johannesburg 13 years ago and is now qualified as a National Candidate judge (judging up to and including Prix St. George).

Debi spent a week in USA at the Devon CDI 3* dressage show in October this year where she sat with FEI 5* judge Ann Gribbons to further her judging education at the higher FEI levels, including Grand Prix.

Her teaching philosophy is along the lines of classical dressage with no quick fixes and the horse’s happiness and welfare is of paramount importance.
