Country Meat Kroonstad

Our faith, hope and passion for Country Meat was ignited on Sernick farm – a tranquil place where you can walk through the tall grass amongst the cattle; listen to the soothingly African sound of cicadas; and lend a helping hand in feeding and watching the animals grow and flourish in the beautiful surrounds of Kroonstad. And of course, when the sun sets, you can revel in the simple pleasure of gathering around the fire-place, surrounded by friends and family – friends and family that for us ultimately formed the brotherhood of Country Meat.

And that is essentially how the Country Meat legacy began. The meatworks, the trucks, the staff, the stores, the events and the meat itself – even this very website – all come down to a group of friends with a shared passion of nature, an addiction to biltong a love of great quality meat.

But of course, before we could be inspired by the majesty of Sernick farm, Sernick farm had to be established…

In 1948, on Liebenbergstroom farm in Kroonstad, a man was born. His name was Nick Serfontein and he would go on to grow a livestock farming business built on quality, integrity and vision. In short, he would become responsible for everything that made Country Meat possible.

After a successful 28-year long career as a consulting engineer, Nic started Sernick (an adaptation of his name and surname) farm – with his birthplace, Liebenbergstroom farm, at its centre. This farm is the source of Country Meat beef: 4000 ha of Kroonstad land swathed in Free State grass – the most nutritious grass in the world. A farm where precision farming practices meet good, honest, traditional values to produce livestock of unequivocal quality.

At Country Meat, we can vouch for the source of our meat, because back on the farm, we’re 100 % in control of the livestock, even before birth, including lineage, diet and living conditions. This is down to Sernick farm’s many state-of-the-art facets, of which the main ones are listed below.
