According to both the British and the USA Pharmacopoea, Cape Aloes (A. ferox bitter crystals) contain less of the active purgative constituent Aloin, or Barbaloin, than Barbadensis Aloe (A. vera). Extensive field studies by McCarthy showed that the concentrations of aloin in Aloe Ferox bitters vary remarkably between geographic regions within South Africa. It has been confirmed that Aloe Ferox with the highest levels of aloin is in the Mossel Bay / Albertinia / Riversdale region, with values 20% - 28% being considerably higher than the figures qouted in the Pharmacopoeas.
