More about Bluegum Cottage at The Garlic House

The Garlic House is a farm-like place for guests to come and share in this wonderful oasis in the heart of the southern Free State. The property is a peaceful and quiet place to stay and the organic garden, where a copious amount of garlic is grown, is a ramble of self-seeding plant heaven. Dinners with seasonal garden produce can be requested on the day of arrival, otherwise there are good restaurants in town. Owner/hostess Kitty Schneider is an artist and goldsmith and her works are on display in the rooms and are for sale.

The “Bluegum Cottage” is the accommodation wing of the Garlic House and, as the name suggests, is shaded by the 120 year old bluegum tree. The guest unit looks out over a vast farm-like garden with hardly a light to be seen at night and not being on a main road assures very little sounds of traffic can be heard. Being the only guests assures one of a peaceful and private stay. In summer guests can cool off in the little dip-pool. In winter guests can sit infront of the large fireplace in the lounge and keep warm.

The guest unit is situated off the side of main house with it’s own private entrance. Parking is on the property and large enough for any size vehicle with a trailer and is very safe (not visible from the road). There are two bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs with a full bathroom on the ground floor. This unit sleeps up to five guests; two in the queen-size bed upstairs and two in the queen size (extra-length) bed downstairs. There is a large uncovered balcony attached to the upstairs room. Large windows allow plenty of light and air into all rooms. The modern yet quirky bathroom has an open shower and a bath. The newly renovated lounge/kitchenette provides comfortable self-catering facilities and also has a single bed in it for larger families. Another single bed can be added by request. A cereal breakfast is included in the price per person per night.

The furnishings are simple yet comfortable, being a combination of antique and modern. The burglar bars are custom-made and designed by Kitty Schneider, reflecting cats, birds and other bits of nature (though security is luckily not a top priority in this small town, crime being very minimal).

Whatever your needs, whether an over-nighting family, a honeymoon couple looking for a romantic and private setting or an artist looking for that undisturbed yet inspiring place to work, we will do our best to give you all you need to make your stay as comfortable a possible.
