Believe in Schatzi Organisation

Believe in Schatzi Organisation (BISO) is a registered NPO (154-024-NPO) that assists young adults and children with special needs to develop greater independence, social confidence and the skills required to live self-driven lives. Our members grow along three conduits, namely:

• Development-focussed recreational activities
• Social development and Enterprise
• Community and Environmental consciousness

Our flagship initiative, Smile and Wave, is leading the way for adaptive surfing in South Africa. With the assistance of experienced coaches and volunteers, BISO surfers adapt to the water and then take to the waves. We have worked with individuals on the Autistic Spectrum, with Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome and various medical conditions – and are keen to keep expanding our team of surfers.

In addition, we are running a campaign for Universal Access, emphasising the need to work alongside government to open public spaces and society. The public, as well as government representatives, are encouraged to join us on our Accessibility Walkabouts and Challenges, through which we identify, photograph and suggest solutions for barriers to access on the streets, at beaches and public transport hubs in Cape Town.

Founded in direct response to the challenges faced by our Schatzi (treasure) and co-founder Ashtan Davids, BISO quickly gained a name for itself in our home suburb Muizenberg. Local businesses, community projects and surf schools came on board to support us and form partnerships. We carry this community spirit with us in all that we do.

In our eyes, Cape Town will become a fully accessible city – and soon after, the host of the Adaptive Surfing World Championship. Why not?
