More about Atlantis Golf Club

Atlantis Golf Club was founded in 2010 with one vision in mind and that was to promote the game of golf and make it accessible to all who lived in the area. A couple of golfers came together and begin to talk about a golf club in Atlantis. These members now fondly known as the founder members were Harold Moses, Edgar Adriaanse, Etienne Bowers, Mark Cloete, and Stanley Matthews. They saw a need but nobody gave them any chance of success. With their passion and love for the game of golf they entered into talks with WPGU. Our first ever golf day was held on the Old ADE sports grounds in Atlantis. Delegates were also invited to this historical day. This event was a huge success and paved the way for many more.

AGC's first ever meeting was held in February 2010 and an executive committee was elected Harold Moses as chairperson, Etienne Bowers as treasure, Gavin Moeratt as secretary, Mark Cloete as marketing and media officer. The Club's constitution was drawn up the following month and AGC were affiliated into WPGU after a debate whether we should join BGU or WPGU. It was also decided that AGC will be a non-profitable organisation.

Our club has since grown and today almost 5 years later membership stands at almost 130 fully paid up members. In 2011 we entered a league team to play in the Harry Solomon league, one of the toughest and oldest leagues. AGC surprised everyone that year and made it through to the final where we eventually lost to Milnerton Golf Club and this only in our first year competing in this tough league (refer to slide show). We also entered a 3rd league team for single handicappers that year. Our juniors also lost in the final of their school league last year (2014) also their first year of competing (refer to slide show)

In 2011 we took ownership of the Wesfleur sports facility. The club house was badly vandalized (ref to photo in slide show). We as members converted the grounds and surroundings into a Mashie and driving course facility. In 2013 our new upgraded facility was opened by the executive Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille. The opening was attended by some high profile delegates also in attendance was WPGU president Naadir Aghedien. We also began to construct 11 proper greens last year thanks to a donation of R100000 from WPGU and also financial support from the City of Cape Town.( refer to slide show)

We have made great strives for such a young golf club. Our vision is to make golf accessible to all and also to challenge the social problems within our community by promoting the game of golf among our youngsters. The members currently at this club come from all walks of life, religious, social, ethnic origins and originate far and wide across the peninsula and have banded together to work hard to make this club a success and not just another business. This passion has attracted many new members who instead of just playing golf to help build a new vision.

Our goal eventually is to get a golf course within Atlantis. An area of more or less between 15 and 20 acres of land would suffice. With the aforementioned goal in mind we would like to petition the City Of Cape Town to assist and set aside grounds that we could utilise as a full blown 18 hole golf course. This would not only help beautify the area as well as bring in more tourists and much needed jobs and capital and investments to the area. This would also provide an escape route for our children who are currently caught in the dragnet of the surroundings and its negativity it instills in them. We would like to see individuals from this community become the role model to the rest of the community.
