Alma School

Alma School’s founding dates back to 1963, when parents of disabled children formed a care group, giving one another a bit of free time to accomplish other things. It is now a departmental school, resorting under the Gauteng Department of Education providing special education for cerebral palsied, intellectually and physically disabled children of all races, between the ages of three and twenty one. At present approximately 230 learners attend the school.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL:
Alma School is divided into different learning phases:
1. Toddler Phase
Children in the Toddler Phase are exposed to a stimulation and perceptual program.
2. Curriculum Phase
The Curriculum Phase consists of Junior learners and Intermediate learners. These learners are exposed to an adapted National Curriculum for the Foundation Phase. The assessment standards are broken down into simplistic steps.
3. School-to-Work Phase (‘School to Work’ program – working skills for school leavers)
The learners in this phase are exposed to life skills and fine motor skills to improve their hand function as part of work orientation as preparation towards placement in sheltered work places or labour market. They follow the ‘School to Work’ program.

Alma School is a registered Non-Profit Organisation with Section 18A Tax Status (tax exemption applicable on donations). Our school relies greatly on donations and sponsorships to ensure our sustainability.
