WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES THE ACVV MAKE?



Protection services for children and families by safeguarding them, increasing the communities’ knowledge and involvement and developing skills so that families can function effectively.

The safe care, nurturing and development of pre-school children in crèches, stimulation groups and pre-primary schools/classes, as well as after school supervision services for primary school learners.

Support and care of older persons and persons with disabilities in the community by means of service centres, assisted living, as well as providing care in homes for older persons/ frail care facilities.

Empowerment of women and community members through capacity building and the development of skills and leadership potential.

WHERE IS THE ACVV?



In more than 570 communities in cities and rural areas of the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and a small part of the North West Province. Consult the “ACVV Contact Points”.

WHERE DO THE ACVV COME FROM?


The ACVV was established on 1 September 1904 in Cape Town by a group of women who wanted to offer active and practical help to victims of the Anglo Boer War. These services grew and transformed from emergency relief, primary health care, educational programmes and welfare work to comprehensive child and family care services that include services to older persons.

WHAT DO THE ACVV LOOK LIKE?
The democratic structure of the ACVV is as follows:



The ACVV is comprised of 114 branches and service branches that are registered as individual Not-for-profit organisations, which are managed by volunteers who act as employers. These managements appoint personnel to render the services.

Most of the ACVV branches and service branches have more than one project that they run.

The ACVV National Council and consists of 24 women that represent the service area and determines policy and strategy for the ACVV as an organisation. Ria Abel is currently the Chairperson.

The ACVV Head Office in Cape Town is responsible for executing policy and strategy. Shanie Boshoff is the Chief Executive Officer.

17 Middle managers, employed by the ACVV National Council are decentralised to the various working areas and act as consultants for the managements and as supervisors for social workers.

The ACVV as an organisation determines on a three yearly basis at the ACVV Congress the policy and strategy for the following three year term. Each ACVV branch and service branch has the right to vote at the Congress.
