More about Umbilo Secondary School

Umbilo secondary School was first opened in Umbilo Road in 1924 and was the first "coloured" school to be opened in the greater Durban area. Since that historic year, the School has undergone numerous chnages and has been alternatively: a Training College and a Junior and Senior Seconday school.

In 1984, Umbilo admitted its first "african" pupils from the townships-against the regulations of the then education department; but this was a clear indication of the school's progress and pioneering spirit.
In 1989, the school moved to Wentworth, into premises formally occupied by Wentworth High School. The premises were in an appalling and dilapidated state comparted to the previous Umbilo premises in Umbilo Road.

Wentworth High School moved into new and more condusive buildings because the old premises as a post World War 1 paraschute factory, with additional prefabricated classrooms, completely unsuitable as a high school. Umbilo was not expected to survive as a school.
In 1989, there were 16 staff members and 180 pupils.

Now in 2013 the school has 40 staff members and 1124 learners

This growth is a direct result of its progressive enrolment policies and the special ethos that governs the school.
