How it began

A koeksister (or koe'sister) derives from the Dutch word koekje, which translates to "cookie".

Koeksisters are of Cape Malay origin, among whom they were known as koe'sisters, apparently suggesting polite gossiping among spinsters.

The Cape Malay version is an oval, fried dumpling with a texture more akin to a cake while the Afrikaner version is much more syrupy and crisp with a piece of dough, usually in the shape of a plait, deep fried in oil and then dipped in a cold syrup mixture.

At Sweet Sisters, we have expanded on the traditional and included the following two “sisters” to the traditional plaited:

Date Sister - a date wrapped in a crispy fried dough, dipped in our special syrup and rolled in coconut

Snack Sister - for those on the run, a delicious nugget of crispy sweetness you just cannot keep your hands off!
