More about Shunyata Sanctuary

The magnificent Valley of a Thousand Hills., nestled amongst the rolling hills of our beloved Kwa Zulu Natal., steeped in History. The inspirational place that breathed life into Gandhis heroism. That gave rise to many of Madibas dreams and inspirations. And the birth place of the great John Dube. Here the air is calm and peaceful, and yet carries on it the power of the nation and one can feel the heart beat of Africa.

Overlooking the wonderful vistas, feeling the warm Kwazulu Natal sun, and hearing the sounds of a thousand birds in the valley below, the dream of Shunyata was born. To create a sanctuary where individuals, companies and communities can find a place of peace and tranquility to nuture the soul and re-enliven the positiveness which we so need.
In essence Shunyata means, Nothingness, the laying bare of the soul to the beautiful, pure world around us. It is a precious moment in space and time, when we put our prejudice, our conditioniung, our fears, our stresses aside, and we allow the purity of thought, clear consciousness to enter into our selves, so we can be freed to make the right decisions, think clearly and to see things in a positive light.

The Shunyata Sanctuary is being created upon a hillside, with a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys. Phezulu Game lodge borders the property, and the sounds of traditional Zulu drumming, whilst watching the giraffes in the distance is something to behold. The property itself boasts magnificent indiginous bush and forest, and a series of outstanding granite boulders of enourmous proportions. Natural wildlife and birdlife is in abundence and butterflies and eagles dance overhead on sunny days. When the mist rolls in however , the view changes, and glimpses of the valley are shown through misty windows when the wind billows. The grounds also boasts medicinal herb gardens and a nursery, with Western, Indiginous and eventually Ayurvedic plants to look at or buy.
Guests can also enjoy a vegan or vegetarian meal, fresh super juice or herbal tea at the Sacred Bean Café.

As South Africans, it is easy to be disillusioned with the goings on in politics, the news, the sports, the community, the crime, the traffic, the corruption and the list goes on. We believe that the Shunyata Sanctuary will provide our community both local and international, that opportunity to put those negative feelings aside and imbue the soul with positive, life changing activities, which will focus on the holistic health of the individual, the family, the community, our beautiful city, our amazing province and our wonderful country.

At the Shunyata Sanctuary, people, companies, and communities are invited to take part in a variety of wellness activities, which will enliven the body, enrich the soul and provide a platform for leading alternative health practioners to pass on and communicate powerfiul messages of healing and health. The emphasis will be on healthy minds and healthy bodies, and being able to express ourselves once again as free human beings. A state of Shunyata, where all the negativities of everyday life are put aside. Activities will include yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, Creative Art workshops, therapeutic dance workshops, Trauma release exersizes, corporate wellness events, herbal workshops, conscious cooking days and many more amazing events.

The Shunyata Sanctuary is also commiting itself to ongoing community upliftment work, with a major branch of the project being an organic permaculture concept, something of an ‘Organic Revolution’, which is currently being modelled, to be rolled out to 500 local farmers, which will empower large segments of the community and drive away the ‘fear of food scarcity’ which is gripping our communities. The Shunyata Farm project will provide the local farmers with a reliable organised distribution network, which will provide food for the surrounding communities, and excess quantities will be delivered to local businesses, The major thrust with the Farming project will be the useage of ‘open pollinated seeds’, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the gentically modified seed stocks which are being forced upon us, and to create a seed bank of organic seed material. This is also called open pollinated seed collecting., and will allow future farmers to tap into the reserves which nature has provided for us in abundence. The Farming will promote waterwise gardeing and sustainable farming techniques.

The Shunyata Sanctuary and Farm aim to shift the conmunities consciousness using healthy mindful activities, healthy fresh food and creating an environment which is condusive to peaceful, constructive change.

Change your mind, Change your life, Change your city
