Background
Shawela Block 23 is situated in the area of Giyani (Our GPS Cordinates
-23.484131,30.864249). The village was found in the earlier 1960s. The leading political party is the ANC and the Ward Councillor is William Mthombeni. The tribal chief for Shawela Block 23 is chief Mahumani (Hosi Nkomo).

There are three school in Shawela, Namely; Baleni Primary School (1960s); Khwezu Primary School (1993); and Mukula High School.

Directions
From Giyani - take R81 South, pass Ritavi Bridge - On your right there is Kremetart Suburb and on the left you pass the Traffic Police Offices. After the Traffic Police offices you will find the Road which goes to the East (Phalaborwa). Turn left and proceed to the East, you will then pass Ngove, Nkomo, and then you will be in Shawela (28km from Giyani, Approx 15 - 20 mins Drive). Warning: Be on the lookout for cattles on the road

Tourism
Baleni rest camp in Shawela is situated in a remote and tranquil Mopani forest adjacent to mineral hot spring on the banks of Klein Letaba River Sautini the place of salt. It provides a glimpse of the traditional lifestyle of the Shangaan culture which includes the traditional way of salt mining and accommodation available in traditional huts. The camp may also arrange for the community to entertain by using local dancing groups e.g. Mgwazeni & Mukula etc. This will ideal place to rest for a day after exploring.

Xawela United is the biggest team in the Area. They make use of Shawela Stadium for their home ground matches.
