Reason2Read Book Club

Reason2Read is a girls book club that supports education and literacy, uniting and empowering young girls through reading across rural SA.
Founded in 2014 (as Reason2Smile at the time) by Lungelwa “Lungie” Mnyamana as a basic concept or vehicle for young people to make a difference in other young people’s lives based on an old South African ethos of Ubuntu, doing simple good. Our projects included sanitary towel and toiletries drive for schools in informal settlements, mentorship and motivational talks, matric dance dress collection drive, and recently a book club as a test.
Based on the different projects we did in the last 2 years (since 2014) we reviewed our strategy and impact ambitions and came to a decision to focus on a specific project that will drive an empowering and self sufficiency agenda, a project that would have long term results and benefit more young girls in rural areas who are currently more disadvantaged because of their locations. It is this reason that we have concluded to evolve and build on the book club idea and that’s how Reason2Read was conceived.
Our objectives are to cultivate the culture of reading and literacy amongst girls in rural areas in order to expand their knowledge and experiences and to ease the burden of lack of resources like resource centres, mentors and libraries in rural areas. A book club is a form of a mobile resource centre that comes to you once a month and you get to learn, engage and discuss thoughts with others. Over and above this, you have an opportunity to develop the culture of reading, being curious resourceful and self-sufficient.
Currently based in Cape Town and Umtata, we aim to be across the country empowering young girls one book club at a time.

We partner with schools across different areas where we have volunteers who will lead the clubs based on our set structure and programme. We target grade 10 and 11 female learners and select a maximum of 20 learners per club in order to create a group small enough to allow for engagements and big enough to give as many girls an opportunity as possible.
