PRINCE ALBERT PICK-A-PIECE for children
REAPING REWARDS FROM RECYCLING WASTE

Pick-a-Piece was started by resident Imke Maeyer on May 2nd 2012.
The scheme is based on one that began in Hermanus some years ago and there are now more than 30 individual schemes around the country.
The Prince Albert project is based at the POP centre in Rondomskrik, in an area where poverty is at its worst and the need is greatest.
On most Wednesday afternoons, up to 150 primary school children bring recyclable waste from their homes (cardboard, tin cans, glass bottles, plastic, paper) to the POP centre. The materials must already be sorted into different bags and the children stand in line for the recyclables to be weighed and points per kilo are earned. After washing their hands, the children exchange the points for food, toys, blankets etc.
The benefits of the scheme are
• children learn about recycling and how to sort it
• children wash their hands ( and sometimes have to be shown how to do so)
• nutritious food is a good boost to their diet
• the children learn about choice and how to spend their points wisely.
• the streets and homes are cleaner
• the children learn that the more work is done to collect the waste, then the greater the reward.
• self esteem is gained as a result of effort
• educational and co-ordination skills from books, toys and games.
• recycling benefits the planet
The scheme is run by volunteers and is a not-for-profit organisation. It is funded by donations from the community and visitors, and from the sale of the town’s recycling to a depot in Oudstshoorn.
There is a large body of helpers and these afternoons are happy ones. The Pop centre is easy to find and the area is very safe for visitors, and we would love you to come and see how Pick-a-Piece works- we guarantee you will be impressed and will leave with a smile on your face!
When; Wednesday afternoons in school term ( but not the first Wednesday of the month).
Time; 2pm to 3pm
Where; the POP centre, Rondomskrik- travelling towards PA Road, take the second entrance into the township after the BP garage. At the T-junction turn right, slowly over the dip in the road, and first left- it is the only large building in the area and you will see the wheelbarrows and children streaming in.
