Sample of learner comments received:

Learner A: “the fact that I hated Accounting as a subject and just used it to make up my APS points. But now that I have a better understanding of it, I see that it’s really not that bad. I also liked getting a look inside the university. I liked the lecturers, tutors and the rest of the staff who helped out. They were all friendly, helpful and made learning fun!”

Learner B: ”the lecturers made me understand more about the things that I didn’t really understand. Now they are clear to me. Now I can say that I am prepared for the Trial and Final exams”.

Learner C: “what I like about the Winter School programme is that I have done extremely well in the Accounting subject and I have improved so much, because I had practised it daily for the last week all thanks to the great lecturers and tutors here at NMMU. I have even decided to study Chartered Accountancy here at NMMU”.

The very favourable feedback provided by the learners indicated that an Accounting Winter School is an important intervention to improve the academic performance of learners from schools from the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area in the field of Accounting. Accordingly, the School of Accounting has decided to run the Accounting Winter School again. The 2013 Accounting Winter School will be made possible with the financial support of Deloitte, a leading professional services firm.

The objective of the 2013 Accounting Winter School is to assist learners in their preparation for the final Grade 12 Accounting examination as well as to give learners a feeling of “what to expect” when they commence studies at university in 2014.

The salient features of the 2013 Accounting Winter School are:
• Learners from schools throughout the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area will be invited to participate.
• Instruction will take place each day from 8:00 to 14:30, where after it is expected of the learners to do assignments at home.
• Instruction will be in English, but can be duplicated in Afrikaans if numbers permit.
• The NMMU School of Accounting teaching and learning model will be used.
o Classes will be facilitated by the NMMU Accounting 1 lecturers who have all been recipients of the “Faculty Teacher of the Year” in the Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences. These lecturers are also fully au fait with the grade 12 curriculum.
o The tutorials will be facilitated by the lecturers, with the assistance of trained accounting tutors from the School of Accounting (all top students in the School) and staff from Deloitte.
• Learners will be given notes, exercises and suggested solutions each day on the topics covered, as well as Grade 12 examination papers.
• Learners will be asked to write a pre-test on day one (prior to the programme commencing) and a post-test on day five (the last day). The test results will be an indicator of the improvement in the marks of the learners after a week of intensive teaching and learning.
• In addition to the formal Accounting programme, learners will be provided information such as:
o How to apply to study at university?
o What is the SAICA Thuthuka programme, and how do I apply?
o How do I become a Chartered Accountant (SA)?
o What career options are there in the field of Accountancy?
