NHE will be the first company in Africa to turn everyday waste into clean, environmentally-considerate, low-carbon energy and CO2, ultimately achieving a 100% diversion from landfill.
The NHE plant in Athlone, Cape Town, is set to be the largest anaerobic digestion plant in Africa and the first waste-to-energy facility of its kind. Construction started in late 2015 and the plant is expected to be commissioned by middle 2017.
Our project partner, Waste-Mart, collects more than 500 tons of general and organic waste daily from municipal, commercial and industrial sources. The waste is utilised to produce 1200 Nm3 of methane (CH4) per hour and 20 tons of food grade carbon dioxide (CO2) per day. The use of this output is fully secured with long term off-take agreements.
Our products are of high quality, with methane content in excess of 97%, exceeding current natural gas pipeline specifications. Our produced food-grade CO2 has numerous green, energy-efficient benefits, especially in cooling and heating applications such as refrigeration plants manufactured by our sister company, Commercial Refrigeration Services.
