surrounding Waterval Boven provides not only abundant opportunities for fly fishing,bird watching and rock climbing amongst its more active pursuits but presents theideal gateway to many historical sites and areas of interest including the fascinating Ancient Stone Ruins and Adam’s Calendar.

Join our team and discover the first ancient lost city constituting dwellings, forts, temples, irrigation systems, agricultural terraces and ancient roads telling a story of their own. The Stone Ruins, which cover all of southern Africa, comprise the largest continuous stone settlements ever built on earth.

Michael Tellinger, a Waterval Boven based researcher, scientist and author, whose first published book in 2005, Slave species of god, reflects his 25-year obsession with science and the cosmos, also co-authored the book Adam’s Calendar with Johan Heine after extensive research and explorations of the area. The Makomati Museum next to the Stone Circle Bistro in Waterval Boven contains a collection of fascinating photographs and objects relating to the existence of an early civilization and is worth a visit.

The tours to Adam’s Calendar in Kaapsehoop or the actual Ancient Ruins in the Waterval Boven area will allow you to experience the magic of the ruins up-close illustrating the lives of its ancient inhabitants

The jewel in the crown of the ruins is the noteworthy stone monolithic Calendar ;
known as Adam’s Calendar, which was discovered in 2003 by fire-fighting pilot and
adventurer, Johan Heine. Studies have placed this man-made structure as being at least 75 000 years old, which predates all other similar structures, found to date and is clearly positioned to record the solstices, equinoxes and days of the year – man’s earliest observatory.The exciting discovery of Adam’s Calendar lies along the same longitudinal line as the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and the Great Pyramid of Giza.

A visit to the site with on of our Tour Guides will yield many interesting facts and observations and the opportunity to view one of the fallen monoliths shaped like the Egyptian Horus hawk head, similar tothe carved birds found on the Zimbabwe ruins. The mystery and intrigue of the ruins deepen when considering that the positioning of three of the monoliths that are aligned to the rise of Orion’s belt in its earliest years.

Additionally this area is geographically made up of black reef quartz, however the
stone structures of Adam’s Calendar are constructed of dolerite. This exciting fact
suggests that the original architects must have gone to a lot of effort to construct and position the stones, perched on the edge of a high mountain cliff, when the closest vein of dolerite is situated more than a kilometre away.

A short detour to Waterval Boven along the N4 to Nelspruit and the Kruger National Park will take you right into the heart of the ruins, get lost in the journey to another time, a hidden gem in Mpumalanga’s history and perhaps experience some of the unanswered questions of human existence.
