LEBANESE CULTURE AND CUISINE
Lebanese Cuisine is hard to describe. How do you sum up the culture that invented the alphabet? Is over 8000 years old? And traded with the ancient Egyptians? What can be said, is that its distinct cuisine boasts flavors of lime, lemon, garlic and herbs, always includes olive oil and good quality sea salt, and its fish and bean dishes are unlike any other cuisine, even of neighboring areas.
Lebanon's earliest known settlements actually date to earlier than 5000 BC. In Byblos, which is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, archaeologists have discovered remnants of fishing communities that lived on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea over 8,000 years ago. So our Sushi bar in Liban Restaurant is an ancient tradition, despite being a modern re-invention.
The Ancient Greeks called these seafaring people "Phoenicians" because of the purple (phoinikies) dye they sold. Because of the nature of the country and its location, the Phoenicians turned to the sea, where they became specialists in seafaring trade, exploration and navigation. Due to this, coser to 2000 BC, evidence of active Phoenician trade with Egypt and the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom exists. The trade of exported cedar, olive oil, and wine from Lebanon resulted in the import of gold and other products from the Nile Valley.
