Jar of Mielies is a lovingly treasured family run business, born out of a true love for the small town craft market, the quaint hideaway farm stall ~ the one heaving with oranges and collections of little rusted things basking in their country garden...with massive mossbolletijes and the best apple crumble pie you have ever tasted.

After yet another Sunday afternoon, 3 glasses of Chardonnay deep, at yet another country market, my eyes wide with delight at all of my treasures I just had to have … I looked upon my beloved husband clattering them all the way to the car – rusty bits and bobs, still full from Oumas Melktert, empty wallet and all and I decided it was time.

And the country market portal was born.


Handcrafted items have always held such special magic – made with love, total devotion and utterly insane talent – crafters are the most underrated artists in the world. Jar of Mielies is a unique retail platform that creates a gateway between the far away crafters, the sidewalk artists and the dynamic South African creative.

By effectively being able to tap into the market of the South African crafter, we are able to bring you, the customer, directly to those intrepid men and women who stand on roadsides and under gazebos, brollies and big straw hats, weekend after weekend, hoping that you will buy something special from them today.

The beauty of our store is that many of the products are made by hand and are totally unique. Which does mean that some of our goods take extra time to make and while our sensationally talented crafters work insanely hard around the clock to get everybody their beautious items,you might just have to wait a week or two to get the exact item you want.
