Butterfly Change for Children

Butterfly is a community organisation that aims to improve the lives children in the Hammanskraal area, north of Pretoria. Butterfly works directly with the children or indirectly by empowering their care givers. We have the following programmes in place:

1.Training and support to people working in day care centres or children’s homes:

Organising training programmes and workshops for people who work with children
Providing transport to and from the training facility
Providing food and accommodation during training sessions
Follow up visits to care centres

2. Planning, improving en development of child care facilities

Renovating and expanding on our own premises to include the following:
- overnight accommodation,
- training facilities for adults,
- camp accommodation for children,
- accommodation for volunteers,
- three baby safe houses,
- an educational playground for children from the community
(mini town, road traffic track, sensory garden, science corners, games, sports etc.)

Conducting assessment of existing community child care facilities and providing assistance with planning and implementing possible improvements
Providing assistance to put up water tanks and improve sanitary facilities at care centres

3. Baby Safe Houses

Three baby houses provide care to abused or abandoned children (under the age of three) until they are reunited with family or are adopted
The baby houses will also serve as a practical training centre for people who care for small children

4. Vegetable gardens and fruit trees

Planting fruit trees
Building vegetable tunnels on our premises and in the community to provide for our own needs and supply to day care centres in the community
Improving the daily nutrition of children
Daily essentials and resources for care centres
Collection and distribution of food, clothes, toys, toiletries, cleaning materials, furniture or equipment according to the needs of individual child care centres

5.Volunteer programme

Providing opportunities and accommodation for individuals who wish to do long term volunteer work be involved in a variety of projects
Organising opportunities for groups or individuals to do one day “impact days”

6.“Time-out” camps

Organising “time-out” camps for children who live in children’s homes
Giving the children an opportunity interact in a different environment and take part in positive activities
Giving the house parents much needed time off
Making available our facilities for church, school or “Kids Club” camps at reasonable prices
